For the second game in a row the Archers leaned on each other to turn in an amazing team effort.
Tonight, the team escaped with a hard-fought win over visiting Calvary in the Moody Big Four Classic. "These guys are amazing," beamed first-year MBI Coach Jack Jordan. "I ask them constantly to give everything they got and to play as a team. These past two games, they most certainly have done that."
Tuesday night Moody suffered a tough 4-point loss to Emmaus at the Solheim Center. But in that game five Archers scored in double figures. Moody had only 7 available players for that game. In tonight's game the Archers had only six players on the roster and again relied on maximum effort and total team play to secure the victory. Jordan added," I've been coaching for a while and I have never faced a college opponent with only 7 and 6 available players respectively, It is not an enviable position to be in."
The freshmen duo of Josh Bartig and Isaac Martinez led the way offensively. Bartig turned in his best performance from the field, tallying 29 points while shooting 11-18 from the floor, 3 of 6 from 3-point land, grabbed 6 rebounds while collecting three steals. Martinez scored 16 points, with 4 rebounds and 3 steals. But in tonight's game, all six Archers shared the spotlight. Senior guards Tre' Walker and Jermaine Humphries had solid performances. Walker hit a pair of clutch shots in the second half keeping the Archers in the game. Humphries turned in his best performance of the season, scoring nine points and grabbing a season high 10 rebounds. States Jordan, "Jermaine has improved with each game, and he came up big tonight. He knocked down a couple of huge shots late and was a monster on the boards with 10 rebounds." Junior guard Cameron Scott shot well (3-6) from the floor notching 7 points, but it was his steal and layup late in the game that helped seal the win for Moody. "Cam gave us a big lift tonight coming off the bench. He is the best pure shooter on our team, and we must find a way to get him more looks." Junior forward DeMorion Jackson did not have a big scoring night, but made his presence felt in the paint grabbing a season-high of 15 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.
The Archers face a formidable foe in St. Mary of the Woods Saturday at 3:00 in their second and final game of the Moody Big Four Classic.
