CHICAGO -- A slow start cost the Sabercats, as they fell 3-1 to ninth-ranked Moody Bible Institute in an all-NCCAA North Region battle today.

Kyle Cummins scored a second-half goal from the penalty spot, but Moody had done the crucial damage, scoring twice in the first eight minutes.

OVERVIEW

  • Result: Maranatha 1-3 No. 9 Moody
  • Venue: Solheim Field, Moody Bible Institute
  • Location: Chicago, Ill.
  • Attendance: 56
  • Record: MBU (3-5-0), MBI (3-3-0)

STORY

Moody showed right away that they came to play, catching the Sabercats flat-footed for two goals just five minutes apart. Grant Kircher hit the post at the other end of the field, but that one chance was the most the Sabercats came up with, as Moody controlled the first half from start to finish.

The Sabercats and Coach Jeff Pill made some halftime adjustments, however, and began to create chances, as Joshua Wright and Aaron Jones both fired shots just wide of the Archers' net.

Just when momentum had shifted, the Archers scored their third goal of the game, as Aiden McHugh snapped a full volley from the top of the box, directly from a throw-in. McHugh's shot flew into the top corner for an unstoppable third goal.

The game seemed to be out of reach, but just one minute later, Jones drew a foul in the Moody penalty area, and Cummins stepped up to bury his third goal of the season and give new life to the Sabercats.

But that was the closest Maranatha would come, as Moody closed out the win and the series advantage in the 2021 season.
